sandstone wall at capitol reef with magpies
the enormous walls and buttes of navajo sandstone throughout the american southwest are enormously varied, but always deeply textured and streaked. in capitol reef national park where this picture originated sheer walls rise hundreds of feet above the roadway, and willow and cottonwood trees crowd the little stream below. there are petroglyphs aplenty, along with wildlife like this family group of magpies in flight.
