typical of forest succession, meadow leads to willow, which leads to aspen, and then to the grand conifers. the willow in winter is orange, and given a dense thicket can produce a warming tableau of color and texture against the chill of snow. here we have spotted a coyote--head down listening for sounds of mice under the snow-- crossing the snow just below a line of fiery willow.
