molly the dog with shackleton and the endurance
the expedition of ernest shackleton to antarctica in 1914 is harrowing in it's epic tale of bad luck, deprivation, and courage. yet all of the men did survive, while none of the dogs drafted into service for the sled-pulling crew did. many of them died of accident, disease, and exposure. finally as the expedition party faced starvation, the last of 69 dogs were shot in january 1916 and then eaten. molly, shown here, is my own rescue dog, and probably not husky enough to be a real sled dog of the caliber of those on the ill-fated trip, but i photographed her on a pile of snow and thought of the dogs of the HMS Endurance crew. I imagined her to be among the last of the canine survivors. trusting that they were in good hands, they were bright eyed, proud, and insouciant to the end. this is dedicated to the animals who so often must bear the worst of human vanity.
